These air fryer sweet potato fries have lightly caramelised edges, tender centres and a smoky paprika coating. They are an easy side dish for burgers, wraps and weeknight dinners. Sweet potato contains more natural sugar and moisture than white potato, so expect browned edges rather than the rigid crunch of a deep-fried chip.
Recipe at a Glance
- Serves: 3–4 as a side
- Prep: 10 minutes
- Cook: 12–18 minutes per batch
- Temperature: 190°C
Ingredients
- 2 medium sweet potatoes (approximately 500–600g), scrubbed or peeled
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ tsp smoked or sweet paprika
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- ¼ tsp freshly ground black pepper
- ¼ tsp fine salt, or to taste
- 1 tsp cornflour, optional, for a slightly drier surface
How to Make Sweet Potato Fries in the Air Fryer
- Cut the sweet potatoes into even batons, approximately 1cm thick. Pat thoroughly dry with kitchen paper. There is no need to soak sweet potatoes.
- Toss with the oil, paprika, garlic powder and pepper. If using cornflour, dust over the fries first, then add the oil and seasoning.
- Preheat the air fryer to 190°C if required by your model. Spread the fries in a loose single layer. Cook in batches if necessary: crowding traps steam and makes them softer.
- Air fry for 12–18 minutes, shaking or turning after 6–8 minutes. Start checking early, particularly if the batons are thin; their natural sugars can brown quickly.
- When tender inside and browned at the edges, transfer to a plate and season with salt. Serve straight away.
How to Get Better Results
Cut evenly so every piece cooks at a similar rate. Dry the potatoes well and use only a light coating of oil. A little cornflour can help, but it will not make sweet potato behave exactly like a white potato chip. If the outside browns before the middle softens, lower the temperature to 180°C for the remaining cooking time.

Storage and Reheating
Cool leftovers promptly and refrigerate in a covered container for up to two days. Reheat at 180°C for 3–5 minutes until piping hot. The fries will soften in storage, so they are best served fresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I have to peel the sweet potatoes?
No. The skin is edible; scrub and dry it thoroughly if leaving it on.
Why are my fries soft?
Sweet potatoes naturally retain moisture. Smaller batches, a dry surface and serving immediately help improve the texture.
Can I use frozen sweet potato fries?
Yes, but follow the packet’s air fryer guidance rather than the timing for fresh potatoes.
